We will have Reindeer Day tomorrow! We will be doing reindeer themed Math, Language Arts, Art and other related activities. As you see in the agenda, we will be painting.
Students brought home Christmas Math, their Advent/Christmas writing book which we worked on together as well as their Advent scratch calendar. There are three more days to scratch but we are on holidays by then, so I said they would have to do them at home with you! Reminder that we have early dismissal on Wednesday and students are invited to wear green and red.

We continue to work practice our pattern words for this week's spelling quiz (wh- and th- -th words).
Students have come a long way this year with their printing. In the new year, I am going to focus more on letter formation, I know students know HOW to form the letters properly however they also know how to sneakily do it the wrong way ha ha! Please make sure your child always has warm clothes, its sometimes hard to tell if it will warm up enough to go out so it would be unfortunate if they weren't dressed appropriately. Also, it is helpful if every article is labelled. Reminder that tomorrow is Library Day. Another cold day! Hoepfully it warms up a bit so we can all get some fresh air during the day.
This week in Math we are working on subtraction as well as word problems. Word problems are difficult in Grade One, especially at this time in the year, as students not only have to decode the words, but also decide what to do. We will work on in this unit as well as in our next Addition and Subtraction unit. We will have our last spelling quiz before Christmas on Friday, him-or-get-____- ____. Two more but I don't have them with me at home and I'm drawing a blank right now, sorry about that. Students have written them in their agendas as well. Pattern words are wh- and th words. Example: whale, which, than, bath. We will work on these throughout the week. Have a blessed week of Joy! Thank you very much for all of your generosity with our Adopt a Family fundraiser. It is very much appreciated and will certainly provide some happiness to families in need.
Today students wrote letters to Santa and we did some group and quiet reading with our stuffed animals. We were also able to have our first Polar Bear Club today with temperatures dipping below -27 and a gentle wind. It was a beautiful day to get some sunshine and fresh air! Have a great weekend! We continue to work through our Writer’s Workshop and Social Studies unit. As many of you know from our interviews, our theme for this unit is us and our families. We are almost done this one, this week we are writing about family celebrations and traditions. It would be great if you could discuss a family Christmas tradition with your child tonight so they have something to write about, you could even draw/write with them on a piece of paper or in today’s agenda spot so they don’t forget. Of course, they can think of something on their own tomorrow in class! This just might be a bit easier for them. The tradition can be anything, decorating the tree, special food, extended family traditions, attending church, skating etc.
In Math, we worked on an Addition/Subtraction sort at the teacher center in centers. This week and next we will work on being able to consistently sort and distinguish addition and subtraction facts. Reminder that tomorrow is the last day to bring cereal for our school’s Adopt a Family fundraiser. Thank you for your generosity :) Just a reminder we have our evening performance for our Advent concert tonight at 7pm at Rosewood Church. Please have your child there between 6:30-6:40.
We have spelling quiz on Friday, you, as, has, for, am, not. I picked 6 for this week because they seemed a bit easier -am, not --> they can sound out -as, has --> just add an H on for has, they can kind of sound it out -you, for --> a bit tricky but they come up in a variety of texts Pattern words are Ch, Sh words. Yesterday I sent home a Math I can checklist in the agenda. This is just to provide you with an update as to how its going in our +/- unit. I appreciate all of your support at home! This week is the last week for our Adopt a Family fundraiser at St. Angela. Our class has been assigned cereal. Any donations that you are able to send would be greatly appreciated. Today students worked on a word pairing-sorting activity. See below. This is a great activity as it allows them to further recognize patterns in words. As you know, it would be impossible to formally learn each word they encounter in texts, this strategy enables them to use words or word patterns they already know to decode new words. For example: if you know “how” it helps you know “now.” I find kids need to be reminded several times at the beginning to remember to use this strategy, so when we are reading a text together or if there is one on the board or whatever, I often remark out loud how one word looks like another so they “should” know it. Just takes practice!
As you will see in the agenda and our November and December newsletters: Here is some info regarding our upcoming Advent Concert at Rosewood Alliance Church. There is an afternoon performance at 1:30 on Tuesday, December 6th. Because of seating, we are asking that only extended family attend this performance. We will take a bus together to the church for the afternoon performance. The evening performance will be at 7, this performance is for immediate family only. Please arrive at the church between 6:25 and 6:40 so we can be ready to go for 7 o’clock start time. We have been working hard on our song! Lastly, I have update the Catholic Faith section of the website, check it out for some weekend activities to do with your child! |
