Dear Parents/Guardians,
The St. Angela Merici school community will be celebrating Education Week from October 17th-21st. The theme for this year’s Education Week is “Celebrating Today, Preparing for Tomorrow.” As part of our celebration, we are looking for a few parents from each class to come to the school and share some information about their job and how they prepared for a career in that field. Parents who volunteer will be asked to present to their child’s class along with their big/little buddies (about 50-60 students). These presentations will need to be about 10-15 minutes in length and will take place on October 21st between 2:30 and 3:30 pm. Teachers will select parent presenters from the pool of volunteers in order ensure a variety of careers are presented. If you are interested in sharing how you “prepared for tomorrow,” contact your child’s classroom teacher. Thank you for considering this opportunity to inspire the students of St. Angela Merici School!

Just a few updates/reminders:
-Please return library books. Our regular library day is Day 4, but I forgot to remind everyone so we will have it tomorrow. I have posted a day schedule on the calendar tab of this website. -We have our second sound quiz tomorrow. -Tomorrow we also have our Terry Fox walk. Bring a toonie for Terry is the fundraiser of the day. -Students are also invited to wear orange tomorrow. Dear Parents/Guardians,
This September, the St. Angela Merici school community will once again be participating in the national Terry Fox Run/Walk. We will be doing a few fundraisers over the course of this next week to raise money for Terry’s cause. Please see below for details. Our school will be walking/running on Thursday, September 29 at 2:35. Monday, September 26: Fundraising forms will go home with students. These forms can be used for tax donations of twenty dollars or more only. Forms are due back Thursday, September 29. You can also donate through the charity website at: http://www.terryfox.ca/EcoleStAngelaMerici. If you donate through the website, you do not need to send the pledge forms back with your child. Tuesday, September 27: Toppers for Terry. Students can wear their hats for the day if they bring two dollars. Wednesday, September 28: Tattoos for Terry. Students can bring two dollars and purchase a temporary tattoo. Thursday, September 29: A toonie for Terry. Students are invited to bring a toonie to support the Terry Fox foundation. Thank you for helping us in supporting a national charity and Canadian hero. Sound/Spelling quiz books have gone home today. They are the blue interlined ones you sent at the beginning of the year. Thank you again for sending all of the supplies on the list, I know the small books may have been a bit more difficult to find, but they are good for students in Grade One. Please return these books by Wednesday.
Our sound quiz this week will focus on the letters e-h-r-m-g-d-o-w. The letter order I am picking follows the Jolly Phonics program, not just randomly chosen by me ha ha! Reminder to please have your child pick a pattern from home and send it tomorrow, Tuesday. This week, we continue to work in literacy centres, I will be reading with each child individually over the course of the week in order to gain a better idea of their reading level. I have been monitoring it up until now. That being said, next week we will be beginning our at-home reading program and I would like to send home appropriately-leveled books with your child. I will send home more info on this next week! Our new Math unit, Numbers to 20, focusses on: counting forwards and backwards, starting and stopping at various points, grouping numbers and number words. I will continue to send home updates as we work through our unit. You will notice in your child's agenda that their message from Friday was "Bring a pattern for Tuesday." We are having our unit wrap up on Tuesday afternoon and students need to bring a pattern from home for it. Some examples I gave include:
-fork, spoon, spoon (take a picture and they could bring it or they could bring the actual objects) -an article of clothing (e.g. a tie, socks) -draw a pattern -a pattern on a household object (e.g. a plate, decoration) -anything else you or they can come up with :) We had our sound quiz yesterday and I was so proud of all students! They knew all or almost all their sounds and worked so well. It is still early in the year and they followed directions and focussed on the task at hand. I will send home the books Monday and they need to be returned Wednesday. You will see them in the agenda. I have updated the Calendar tab on this website. Happy Fall!
We enjoyed a very nice mass this morning at Holy Family Parish. How blessed we are to have Catholic schools in Saskatchewan! Students have brought home some sound practice quiz we did today. Please see their agenda pocket. One of these activities is a practice quiz to help prepare them for the quiz tomorrow, they did very well! Students also worked on a fall art project. I will hang their work up in the room for a bit and they will then bring it home. Students are bringing home some Math patterns they worked on yesterday and today. We practiced each letter pattern together and then they had to make their own and complete the page independently. This is to give you an idea as to how things are going in the classroom. So far students are progressing nicely and we should be able to complete the unit on time.
We also continue to practice for our sound quiz on Friday both independently and in groups. Students have brought home a Pp phonics sheet they worked on today. We had some Big Buddy time today, which students were very excited about! As you can see in the agenda, Friday is the last day for QSP orders. This CSCC fundraiser supports a lot of the extras they put on in the school. Working hard while enjoying some sun! On Friday, we will be having a sound quiz. I know that some students know all of their sounds but this will also prepare them for our spelling quizzes, which will begin in a few weeks. It usually takes a few weeks for students to get into the routine of a quiz: not being able to get the answer from me or a friend, having to stay quiet and not shouting the answer out, having to write the answer in the right spot, things like that! This Friday, our sounds will be, s-a-t-i-p-n-c/k. Students have also recorded these letters in their agenda. The way the quizzes will work is I will say the sound, do the corresponding action and give a couple of words containing the sound. Students will then need to record the letter. For example: ssssss, snake, sit, supper. Note that I will not be saying the sounds in the above order. Please practice with your child throughout the week, we will also continue to practice at school. Thank you for your support! Below I have listed some ways you could practice the sounds.
You will have noticed that yesterday, Thursday, your child brought home a word shape worksheet. Word shapes are a great way to help students gain some visual awareness in distinguishing between tall, short and hanging letters. We work on this every day in class. Properly formed and sized letters and printing is an outcome on every report card term in Grade One. Word shapes also become helpful later on when we begin our more formal spelling program.
We have also begun doing some very basic invented spelling in class. Spelling and seeing kids learn to write is one of the most exciting parts of Grade One. We also continue to work on patterns in class. This week we focused on the core and different letter patterns. Yesterday and today I also introduced the idea of Self Control with the students. This ties into Social Studies and Health and of course, into helping students become more focused and mature students. Just a reminder that tonight is our Meet the Teacher night. It is a come and go from 6:30-7:30. Please remember that the purpose of tonight is to meet me and there is also some work out for you to see. If you have any concerns, please send me a note in the agenda. If you are unable to make, that is just fine! If you would like to see the work I have set out, please let me know and I will send it home for the weekend. It will just need to be back for Monday.
Students have brought home a T activity page. They did the puzzle by themselves and then we spelled the words together. In the next coming week, I will be introducing more simple consonant-vowel-consonant words to students. I do not yet expect them to be able to read and spell them but they do need to begin gaining an awareness of sounds and blending them together. I will continue to send more information on this as necessary. Thank you for your support. We are missing a couple of evacuation hoodies, please send those as soon as possible. :) As well, I mentioned in the back to school note that students need to have a change of clothes in their backpacks in case of an accident, please make sure your child has a set inside a bag in their backpacks. This avoids messy situations for your child, the class and myself should they need any. Please remember that if it happens that they need clothes and don't have any, the office or myself will be phoning for you to bring them at the moment. Thank you!! |
