Yesterday we worked on the -igh vowel pattern, practicing several words with that pattern. As with our other word patterns, I don't always expect students to spell these words correctly, rather I hope to see them be able to recognize and read these patterns in texts.
We continue to work through our current Social Studies unit, which focusses on needs and wants. As well, as part of our Arts Ed unit, we have been reading Jan Brett books, discussing her illustrations, story lines and content. They are great books! Reminder that tomorrow we have spelling quiz, today we worked on both the sight and pattern words. Students will bring home two activities today.

It is Library Day tomorrow!
This week, our Count Your Blessings fundraiser is Bring 10 cents for every soup can and cereal box you have. As I mentioned last week, we have begun Geometry. Below are a list of outcomes students will be expected to acquire throughout the unit. It is usually a fairly quick unit, in the next week or so I will plan to send home a paper copy of this along with how your child is doing.
I can name basic Math shapes. I can name basic 3D shapes. I know the difference between 2D and 3D shapes. I can draw 2D shapes. I can sort 2D shapes by attributes. I can sort 3D shapes by attributes. I can recognize why 2D or 3D shapes have been sorted a certain way. I can recognize the 2D shapes that make up 3D shapes. I can recognize and name everyday objects are 3D shapes. K-3 Family Reading night!!!!
Who? Kindergarten- gr 3 students and families What? Come read and spend some time with the family When? Tuesday, March 28 @ 630-730 Where? St Angela Library and Rotunda Please RSVP to the classroom teacher to give an idea of numbers. See you there! Just a little "reminder" about sending any tall/skinny glass jars you may have around home to school. No need to go out and buy a food specifically for this but if you happen to have any that would be helpful!
St. Angela is beginning its Lenten fundraiser for Chalice. This week the fundraiser is bring 10 cents for every stuffed animal and video game you have.
We are working through our Geometry unit. Themes from this unit include: -sorting 2D and 3D shapes -distinguishing between 2D and 3D shapes -noticing 2D shapes in 3D shapes -recognizing 2D and 3D shapes in everyday objects Students also have some homework due on Wednesday. See their agenda or note below for info. This week we are beginning a new Writer’s Workshop unit: expository writing. Students will be writing how-to books. This entails: writing materials list, step by step instructions and drawings, so it would be best if they picked something they could write about in this way. Please discuss with them something that they are good and knowledgeable at making or doing. For example: building a lego car, drawing a picture of ____, making a beaded bracelet, scoring a soccer goal, making a sandwich, making chicken noodle soup, packing a lunch, really ANYTHING that they and you feel they can write about, the more creative the better! One thing to note is they cannot choose video games. Please discuss with them and pick a topic by Wednesday, March 22. If students bring 2 dollars in support of Breast Cancer, they can wear a hat for the week. Students are also invited to wear pink tomorrow. <---- CANCELLED.
Wednesday we will do St. Patrick's Day activities so that will be our green day, if your child would like. I am sending home spelling quiz books today. Students did very well! Our second bonus word is actually a sentence. Students had to write a sentence using one of the spelling words. At this time in the year, they should be using a capital at the beginning and a period at the end. Of course, the sentence should also make sense (most understand this last concept at this time). Students brought home a math review paper they did on Tuesday. I did look through them but you will notice that I haven't marked on it and your son/daughter may not have finished it all. This is fine, this activity was to practice for our division assessment as well as to give you an extra idea as to how things went for them in this latest unit. Students were given instructions on how to do it but did complete the worksheet independently.
I realized today that I forgot to have students write down their weekly spelling lists in their agendas. We practiced them today, as we have been throughout this week. I told students that they don't need to study like crazy tonight, just a little review is fine. We will still have quiz tomorrow and if it goes well, great, but if it ends up being too hard we will do the same list next week. (I didn't want them to worry!) In the past few weeks, there have been numerous siblings from our class coming down to deliver messages, book orders, etc. Please make these arrangements with your children before school, it is disruptive to both children to leave class/interrupt our class to exchange these messages. I know sometimes changes come up and that is just fine but it has becoming quite recurrent. Thank you for your assistance in helping our classroom run smoothly. Our Numbers to 100 unit is wrapping up this week. While we will be working with numbers for the remainder of the year, I will be assessing their knowledge of this unit on our upcoming progress report. As you know, I sent home a mid-unit update on their progress before February break. I am hoping families have been practicing at home as necessary. I have attached the outcome checklist to the bottom of this post again. If you are curious how your child is doing, a simple check in on the concept would be quick to do! While I work with each child in their guided math group on a daily basis, I would still like to look through their workbooks, I will send these home after I have had a chance to more formally look through them.
Reminder that tomorrow is Library Day.
For the WE Day fundraiser, tomorrow is wear one colour day, so if they wished, students could wear all red, all purple etc. I have sent home 2 progress updates this week, I hope both have made it home. Please let me know if they haven't. |
