As you will notice in the agenda, we are going for a walk tomorrow. I encourage children to dress for the weather. It is supposed to be warm so whatever they may need (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen) they should bring/have on.

Students are bringing home a mid-unit Math assessment. Please keep in mind this assessment reflects their current skill set, this could change over the next couple of weeks and will therefore be reflected differently on the progress report.
New words and word patterns have gone home for spelling quiz, please practice throughout the week. We have begun our last Social Studies unit, it centers around basic map skills. I am hoping the weather will hold out this week, I plan to take the students for a walk to the public library on Wednesday afternoon, will confirm tomorrow, Tuesday. Reminder: tomorrow evening is our last Reading Night of the year. 6:30-7:30. The Math quiz papers did not make it home today, I forgot the kids made Math questions for me on the back and I did not fill in the answers. I know they would let me know I didn't do my homework haha! I'll get them home tomorrow.
Crazy Hair Day is on Thursday, as well as Spelling Quiz. We practiced our pattern words today, which they did very well with. Today students did a mid-unit Math quiz. On this quiz, there were addition and subtraction number problems. We haven't quite gotten to word problems yet so that is why they were not included. I will send these quizzes home tomorrow, it will give you an idea as to how your child has been doing with the content being taught. Please practice with them as necessary. Next week I will send home the unit checklist with more specific outcomes checked out (see earlier blog post for this list).
Reminder that order forms for Menchies are due Wednesday. As well, please remember to send back the running record I sent home last week signed. We did a lot of catch up on things this week, so not much to report home on.
One thing we did begin a little while ago is Fully Alive. Fully Alive is a family life, Catholic Education program used throughout Canada. We will be working through this program until the end of the school year. Students will be periodically bringing work home from the unit and/or homework for you to complete together and bring back to school. Below are the basic themes from the program. Theme 1: Created and Loved By God • explore the gifts of creation, and, especially, the gift of people. • discover that each person is unique and has likes and dislikes. • learn that we all have feelings and that we all grow and develop. Theme 2: Living in Relationship • introduce our families, and talk about the activities families enjoy together. • explore changes in families, the strength of family love, and the special place of each person in the family. • discover more about what it means to be a friend. Theme 3: Created Male and Female • meet Dominic and Sara, who fall in love and decide to marry. • discover that husbands and wives share their love by becoming parents. • learn about the care and love babies need after they are born. Theme 4: Growing in Commitment • explore how we depend on our families and what it means to be dependable. • discover that promise is a special word and is to be used with care. • explore how we make choices and the meaning of consequences. Theme 5: Living in the World • explore the world as an amazing place to be and learn about. • learn about some of the ways people care for God's creation. • discover some of the work adults do to contribute to making the world a good place to be. Today students have brought home reading running records I did with them late last week or yesterday. I have attached a blue paper with individual comments and further information about this current R.R. Please see the agenda for these papers.
I know there are a lot of Pats fans in our room so I thought it would be fun to have a Pats day in celebration of the current series. From my research which I hope I have read accurately, I see they play tomorrow so students are invited to wear Pats gear or colours tomorrow. We will also do one or two little activities to go with the day. Students have brought home some Mental Math practice papers (I mentioned them earlier this week), you will notice I recorded how long it took them to complete. With Mental Math, my goal is not for them to be really fast, but for right now I would like them to realize that they can do simple addition in their heads. Also, you will notice in their agenda that they (and you) have some homework tonight. They wrote 4 +/- problems for you to solve and it would be great if you could give them some to work on as well, this can be done out loud or on paper.
Reminder that tomorrow is spelling quiz! We have been practicing. This week we are focussing on Mental Math. Yesterday and today, students worked on adding 1 and 2 only. We will continue to build on addition and then focus on subtraction next week.
Tomorrow, Wednesday, is Library Day. As you will see in the Calendar section of the website, our liturgy is actually at 11am on the 25th, not 1pm as the newsletter states. Parents are welcome to come. |
